NCERT Solutions For Class 7 English Honeycomb Chapter 1 Three Questions, There was once a king who thought that for him to be successful, three questions had to be answered. They were:
- What is the right time to begin something?
- Who should he listen to?
- What is the most important thing for him to do?
The answers by the wise men
The king sent his messengers to find people who could answer these questions. Many wise men tried to do so but their answers were not satisfactory. Further, some of them felt that the king must follow a timetable and others thought that there is no way to find out in advance the right time to do something.
When it came to who the king should listen to, some of them said that he should listen to his councilors, some said the priest, some said the doctor, some said magicians, and some said, soldiers. When it came to the last question, some of them said that science is very important, some said fighting wars, and others said religion. This left the king in a very confused state and did not reward anyone.

The king seeks help from the hermit to answer the three questions
The king then thought of seeking advice from a wise hermit who lived in the jungle. He knew that the hermit only spoke to ordinary men so he dressed up as a peasant and left his horse and bodyguards behind. The hermit was digging the land in front of his hut. The king told him about the three questions. However, the hermit did not reply and continued digging.
The king offered to dig on his behalf and the hermit allowed him to do so. In the evening, the king asked the hermit again but at that moment someone came running towards the hut with blood flowing from his stomach and fainted before them. They found that he had a deep wound and the king dressed it until the bleeding ceased. They then gave him some water and made him lie on a bed inside the hut.
The man then apologized to the king to which the king said that he does not even know the man. The man then said that he had actually come to kill the king as he had killed his brother and seized his property. However, the king’s bodyguard had seen him and wounded him. He vowed to serve the king for the rest of his life as he had saved him.
Then the king forgave him and offered to send his doctors and servants to take care of him.
The answers to the three questions
The next day, the king went to the hermit for the last time and saw him sowing seeds in the beds that he dug the day before. The king asked him once again and the hermit said that the king has already found the answers. The hermit said that if the king had not pitied him, he would not have dug all evening and the mad would have killed him. Therefore, the most important time was when he was digging the beds.
The most important person was the hermit as he had important business to do with him. Further, when the man came bleeding, the most important time was used to save his life which made him the most important person and what the king did for him was the most important business.
