Today, I, Preeti, will speak about Gandhi Jayanti.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on 2nd October. It is an event which is celebrated in India to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. That is to say, it is a very important national holiday and is one of the three national holidays of India. The United Nations has also adopted 2nd October as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Likewise, Gandhi Jayanti is observed across all states and territories of India. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat.
Therefore, on this day, people shower their prayers and services to Mahatma Gandhi. Commemorative ceremonies and cultural events are held in colleges, local government institutions and socio-political institutions. The statues of Mahatma Gandhi are decorated with garlands and flowers. Meanwhile, his favourite song Raghupati Raghava is also sung at some of the meetings.
One of the most important people involved in the movement for the independence of India, Gandhiji was a non-violent activist, who led the independence movement through a non-violent protest.

During Gandhi’s life, India was a colony of the United Kingdom, but wanted independence. He was a huge leader during that era and his thoughts helped catalyze the Indian independence movement.
Gandhiji’s principle of satyagraha, often translated as “way of truth” or “pursuit of truth”, has inspired other democratic and anti-racist activists such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela and many other international leaders. Gandhiji often said that his values were simple, based upon traditional Hindu beliefs such as: truth (satya), and non-violence (ahimsa).
